Sick Day: Fun With Color

The majority of my kids are down and out with yet another virus!  So, to kill boredom we decided to have a  little fun with color!  First we read some of our favorite books about paint and color (listed at the bottom).  The kids really enjoy color-themed books and consequently, we read all six books in one sitting.  They even asked to read some of them twice!

Then we got to painting…Usually I set out traditional painting tools, paint and paper for the kids.  This time I decided to let them have some fun using their imaginations to try and find new items that they could use to paint.  I LOVE how creative kids are!  Here are some of the things that they came up with: spider man action figure,  plastic princess figures, bottle caps, wine corks, play food, cars, plastic dinosaurs and animals, pencils and balls!  I set up “painting stations” at our kitchen table, the art easels and one painting station in a large box that we got from Costco (the rule being that the balls that they wanted to use to paint with had to be rolled/bounced inside of the box).  Then I added a few paint brushes into the mix and let them have at it.  The kids had a great time painting and I had a lot of fun watching them create!  My favorite things they painted with were the toy snake (it made some fun designs slithering across the paper) and the bouncing balls (it was cool to see the paint roll on the paper as the ball rolled and splatter as the ball bounced).

Our favorite books about paint and color.  My five year-old would like me to add in here that her two favorites are the books about talking crayons (listed below).  “Wouldn’t that be cool mom – I wish my crayons would talk to me!”

  •  Little Blue and Little Yellow, Leo Lionni

  • White Rabbit’s Color Book, Alan Baker

  • A Color of His Own, Leo Lionni

  • My Crayons Talk, Patricia Hubbard

  • The Crayon Box That Talked, Shane Derolf (I must admit that this is one of my favorites too!)

  • Harold and the Purple Crayon, Crockett Johnson
