One of of my favorite things to do with my Kindergarten/ First Graders was to keep some black construction paper in the freezer for observing snowflakes. We would read the book “Snowflake Bentley” and then every kid would get a piece of cold black paper to take outside in the falling snow. It is amazing how clearly you can see individual snowflakes once they fall onto the paper, esp. with a magnifying glass. We’d write about it in our science journals and then as a follow-up, cut snowflakes out of white construction paper to decorate the classroom windows.

I love this idea! And it sounds like we’ll have enough snow in our future to give it a try!
