Groundhog Day Treat

February 2nd is Groundhog Day, maybe Phil will predict an early spring (wouldn’t that be nice?).  Groundhog day brings with it another fun school party for my kids.  Which, in turn, means that I have to come up with some themed treats.  In case you are in the same situation, I wanted to pass along our family’s favorite groundhog day treat idea: Groundhog Day Donuts!

Groundhogs Day Treat

The first time I made these for the kids to bring to school they were ecstatic (and they have loved them every time since)!  It makes me so happy when the kids get excited about things that I do for them.  These are very simple to make and the kids can even help out.  Below are instructions in case you want to give it a try!

Ingredients:

  • Plain Donuts
  • Chocolate Candy Coating
  • Milano Cookies
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Red Heart Sprinkles
  • Oreo Cookies (Crushed)

Instructions:

  1. Put oreo cookies into a ziploc bag and have the kids crush them into oreo cookie crumbs. Pour the cookie crumbs out into a medium-sized bowl.
  2. Dip the top half of your plain donut into the chocolate candy coating and then dip the donut into the cookie crumbs.  Place the donut on cookie tray lined with wax paper.  Repeat this step for all remaining donuts.  Place the cookie tray with your donuts into the fridge.
  3. Cut your milano cookies in half.
  4. Melt some of your chocolate chips and use this melted chocolate to paint on little groundhog faces.  Use a red heart sprinkle for your groundhog’s nose.
  5. Use your melted chocolate to stick on chocolate chip groundhog ears.
  6. Once your groundhogs are complete, place them in the middle of your donuts.

Don’t they look like little groundhogs popping their heads out of the dirt?  These are so much fun to make and they taste really good too!
