Olivia the Pig Visits the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire

Dover, NH– One of modern children’s literature’s rambunctious but loveable characters will bring her own brand of sparkle and mischief to The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire on Saturday, January 31. Olivia the pig, star of the Olivia series of books written and illustrated by Ian Falconer, will be at the museum from 10 am and 2 pm to meet young fans as part of the popular Books Alive Children’s Literacy Series.

“The goal of our Books Alive program is to get kids excited about reading and to make it a regular family experience,” explained Xanthi Gray, Humanities Educator at the Children’s Museum of NH. “Children love Olivia’s adventures, because her actions and emotions are always over the top. Her enthusiasm is infectious, making her stories fun to read and talk about together as a family.”

Olivia’s creator, Ian Falconer, started his artistic career designing sets and costumers for stage productions in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and London. He also became known for his illustrations in The New Yorker. The character of Olivia was inspired by Falconer’s niece and he began writing his first story for her. His black-and-white illustration style, splashed with touches of red, stood out in the world of children’s picture books, and Olivia became a hit with a new generation of young readers.

At the museum’s Books Alive event, museum staff educators will be reading a variety of Olivia books throughout the day. Costumed character Olivia will be popping in and out to greet children, exchange a hug or high-five, and pose for photos. There will also be a variety of pig-inspired literacy, math and creative activities for children to enjoy.

All Books Alive activities are included with regular paid admission to the museum: $9 for adults and children over the age of 1 and $8 for seniors. Museum admission is free for Children’s Museum of NH members and children under 1 year old.
