EurekaFest at the Museum of Science

If you are looking for something fun and educational to do with the kids this weekend, consider taking them to EurekaFest at the Museum of Science.  On June 22nd, high school students from around the world will build inventions at MIT and then bring them to the Museum of Science to compete in a wind-powered design challenge.  After cheering on the competitors, your little inventors can participate in their own design activities.  Prizes will be awarded throughout the day and the day will conclude with a rubber duck themed finale!

The Museum of Science has many other wonderful exhibits, presentations and programs that you can explore during your visit as well.  Young Paleontologists will get a kick out of meeting Triceratops Cliff, a 65 million year old fossil in the Museum’s Colossal Fossil Exhibit while little nature lovers will adore walking through the Museum’s Butterfly Garden, a tropical oasis where they’ll view exotic plants and beautiful butterflies!

And of course, because you know that I love to save you a few bucks, please check out Mommy Poppins article on how to visit Boston’s Museums at a discount.  Additionally, don’t forget to check with your local library to see what museum passes they offer.  Many public libraries offer museum passes that offer discounted (or free) admission for use at New Hampshire and Boston-area Museums to their cardholders.  Often times you can reserve these passes in advance either in person, via the phone or online.

For more information on EurekaFest please see this link.  Below is event information pulled from the Museum’s website:

“Upon entering the Museum, you’ll receive a special program including a list of the day’s events and locations plus an activity passport. After completing each of the activities below, get your passport stamped. Turn your completed passport in at the EurekaFest table in the Museum lobby for a prize.

Design Challenges

Think like an engineer to design, build, and test a prototype solution to a given problem. Enjoy a fun, engaging experience with engineering and innovation processes.

Discovery Center: Experiment Station

Children up to age 8 can hone their basic engineering skills while designing, testing, and improving creations they build themselves. Assist your budding engineer in building a glider and sending it down our flight track, designing a bridge and testing it under the weight of model turtles, or creating a paper helicopter and trying out different blade designs.

Meet an Inventor

Inventors from Continuum, a global innovation and design consultancy, discuss the inspiration and process behind the development of some of their recent inventions, including the Reebok Pump and One Laptop Per Child.”
